John Johnstone

John Johnstone is one of Scotland's leading contemporary artists working in the figurative style.

A glance through his work is enough to tell one that John Johnstone is a unique artist - in the special sense that he has no problem in being original.
His only problem is keeping that originality within bounds. Usually originality of this sort is associated with naive art - that is to say, with the work of painters who have missed out on any kind of formal training. However that is not the case here as John studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art at the very end of the 1950's and during the first half of the 1960's.

After receiving a major travelling scholarship and using it to visit a number of European cities, he returned to the same college and taught there for many years. In other words, his career has been that of an art profassional, working within the framework of a Scottlsh art world that has a particularly deep rooted technical tradition, and where artists continue to take a fiece pride in their technical skills.
